Byron Bay has no train station and no airport of its own, so nearly every visitor arrives by road, from Ballina, the Gold Coast or Brisbane. Central Byron parking is metered, limited and genuinely difficult through the summer holidays, Easter and event weekends, and Ewingsdale Road slows in both directions at those times. Most of our guests walk or cycle once they are here, which is why a return transfer often works out easier and cheaper than a week of car hire, fuel and parking.
If your plans include the hinterland, Nimbin, Yamba or several wedding venues, a hire car earns its place. We will say so if you ask.

Departures are planned backwards from your check-in window, not from the drive time. As a rule we leave Byron about two hours before a domestic departure from Ballina, around two and a half hours for Coolangatta, and three to three and a half hours for Brisbane, with more time in school holidays. Early international departures from Brisbane often mean a 3am to 5am pickup, at the same fixed fare as a midday run.
Which airport is best for Byron Bay? Ballina Byron Gateway is closest at about 35 minutes. Gold Coast Airport has more flights and is about 50 minutes away, and Brisbane has the widest international choice at roughly two hours.
Can you reach a holiday house or wedding venue out of town? Yes, including Wategos, Suffolk Park, Ewingsdale and the hinterland, and venues down unsealed driveways.
Should we book a return transfer or hire a car? Many guests skip the hire car entirely, because parking and traffic in town are genuinely difficult in peak weeks. A return booking also takes 10% off the return leg.
