Getting from Ballina, Gold Coast or Brisbane airport to Byron Bay can be done several ways, and the cheapest fare on paper is not always the cheapest trip. We run private transfers, so treat this as an interested opinion, but we have written it the way we would explain it on the phone, including the cases where we are not the answer.
A shuttle is the cheapest per-seat option and it does the job. You travel on the shuttle's timetable rather than your flight's, so a delay can mean waiting for the next departure, and the run includes other passengers' drop-offs before yours. On a busy afternoon that turns a 50-minute drive into considerably longer.
Suits: solo travellers and couples with light bags and no fixed plans that afternoon. Less suited to: families with car seats, early departures, or anyone landing late.
Taxis are metered, and the meter does not care about traffic, roadworks or the school-holiday crawl through Ewingsdale. Availability at the smaller airports is thin: Ballina has a modest rank tied to flight arrivals, and a maxi taxi big enough for a family with luggage generally needs booking ahead anyway. If you are booking ahead, you may as well have a fixed price.
Suits: short local hops, or an unplanned trip where you accept the meter. Less suited to: airport runs where you want the price settled before you fly.
Rideshare works in the region but it is the least predictable option for an airport arrival. Prices rise with demand, which peaks exactly when flights land, and no driver is obliged to accept a 55 km trip across a state border or a 170 km run from Brisbane. Nothing is confirmed until someone accepts, which is a poor position to be in at 10pm with children and bags. Coverage also thins outside town, in the hinterland and late at night.
Suits: flexible solo travellers on short trips in daylight. Less suited to: long airport corridors, groups, late arrivals and out-of-town addresses.
A hire car is genuinely the best option for some trips. If your plans include the hinterland, Nimbin, Yamba, several wedding venues or day trips up the coast, drive. What people underestimate is the cost of a car they barely use: a week of hire and fuel, plus metered and limited parking in central Byron, plus the counter queue on arrival and the refuel-and-return routine on the way home. Most visitors to Byron walk everywhere once they arrive.
Suits: touring itineraries and multi-venue events. Less suited to: a week based in town.
There is no train to Byron Bay. Bus connections exist and are inexpensive, but with luggage, a schedule and a flight involved they are the slowest option on this list. Worth knowing about; rarely worth choosing after a long flight.

Split across three or four people, the cost per head is usually close to a shuttle once you count the hour you get back.
Suits: families, groups, early departures, late arrivals, out-of-town addresses and anyone who would rather not sort transport out on arrival. Less suited to: a traveller whose real need is a car for the week.
