There is no airport in Byron Bay. Three airports serve the town instead, and the right one depends less on distance than on where you are flying from and what time you land. We drive all three every week, so this is the comparison we give guests on the phone.
Ballina is 35 km from Byron Bay, roughly 35 minutes by road, and it is the only airport where you can genuinely land and be at your accommodation inside an hour. The trade-off is flight choice. Ballina is served by domestic routes from Sydney, Melbourne and Newcastle rather than a full national timetable, and there are no international arrivals. If your flight fits, it is the easiest arrival on the coast by a wide margin.
Gold Coast Airport sits at Coolangatta right on the Queensland border, 55 km and about 50 minutes from Byron Bay. It carries far more flights than Ballina, including international services, and the drive south is a straight run down the Pacific Motorway with one turn at Ewingsdale. One detail catches people out every summer: Queensland does not observe daylight saving. Between early October and early April, Byron Bay runs an hour ahead of the airport clock, so a 7am departure from Coolangatta means a 6am pickup by the terminal clock and 7am by yours. We set pickup times against your flight rather than the local clock, which removes the problem entirely.
Brisbane is 170 km north, about two hours and five minutes of motorway driving, and it has by far the widest choice of domestic and international arrivals. For long-haul travellers it is usually the only sensible option. The other reason people choose Brisbane is the connection risk. Flying into Brisbane and driving south is one vehicle and one driver the whole way. Flying into Brisbane and connecting to Ballina adds a second check-in, a baggage transfer and a small aircraft that can be held up by weather.
Cheap flights into Ballina can be the most expensive option once a family of four needs a hire car for a week they never intended to drive. A late arrival into Brisbane can be perfectly comfortable when someone is waiting for you inside the terminal and the fare is already fixed. Work out the door-to-door cost and the door-to-door time, not the airfare on its own.
