The route, in order
From either Brisbane terminal the drive follows the Gateway Motorway south, crosses the Brisbane River on the Gateway Bridge, joins the Pacific Motorway and runs down past Logan and the Gold Coast. The border crossing at Tweed Heads is unmarked apart from a sign. From there it is Chinderah, Brunswick Heads, then the turn at Ewingsdale for the last few minutes into Byron Bay.
It is a comfortable drive on good road for almost the entire distance. The slow parts are predictable: the Gateway and Logan approaches in Brisbane's afternoon peak, and the final stretch into Byron during school holidays.
When the two hours becomes two and a half
- Weekday afternoons between about 3pm and 6pm on the Brisbane and Logan motorways.
- Friday afternoons heading south, especially long weekends.
- NSW and Queensland school holidays on the approach into Byron via Ewingsdale Road.
- Any major event weekend in Byron Bay or on the Gold Coast.
