Nobody enjoys guessing this at midnight before a 6am flight. We plan departures backwards from your check-in window rather than from a mapping app's drive time, and here is the reasoning we use, airport by airport.
Ballina is 35 minutes from Byron Bay and check-in is quick, so a two-hour lead from Byron is comfortable for a domestic flight, and about 90 minutes from Lennox Head or Ballina itself. For the first flights of the morning we are regularly on the road well before dawn.
The drive is about 50 minutes, but the border crossing at Tweed Heads and Ewingsdale Road can both add time, so we plan around two and a half hours from Byron Bay for a domestic departure and longer for an international one.
From early October to early April, Queensland does not observe daylight saving. A 6am departure on the terminal clock is 7am in Byron Bay, which sounds like a gift until you read it the wrong way round. We schedule against your flight number, so it is handled.
The drive is about two hours and five minutes in good conditions, and international check-in wants a wider window. For an early international departure we typically collect from Byron Bay between 3am and 5am, which carries the same fixed fare as a midday run.
