Timing an early flight out of Byron Bay
Nobody enjoys guessing this at midnight before a 6am flight. We plan departures backwards from your check-in window rather than from a mapping app's drive time, and here is the reasoning we use, airport by airport.
Ballina Byron Gateway Airport: about two hours before departure
Ballina is 35 minutes from Byron Bay and check-in is quick, so a two-hour lead from Byron is comfortable for a domestic flight, and about 90 minutes from Lennox Head or Ballina itself. For the first flights of the morning we are regularly on the road well before dawn.
Gold Coast Airport: about two and a half hours, and mind the clock
The drive is about 50 minutes, but the border crossing at Tweed Heads and Ewingsdale Road can both add time, so we plan around two and a half hours from Byron Bay for a domestic departure and longer for an international one.
From early October to early April, Queensland does not observe daylight saving. A 6am departure on the terminal clock is 7am in Byron Bay, which sounds like a gift until you read it the wrong way round. We schedule against your flight number, so it is handled.
Brisbane Airport: three to three and a half hours
The drive is about two hours and five minutes in good conditions, and international check-in wants a wider window. For an early international departure we typically collect from Byron Bay between 3am and 5am, with the fare for your selected collection time confirmed in the booking breakdown.
Remember there are two terminals a couple of kilometres apart. We confirm the right one from your flight number rather than dropping you at the wrong building at 5am.
When to add time
- NSW and Queensland school holidays, and any Byron or Gold Coast event weekend.
- Friday and Sunday afternoons on the Pacific Motorway.
- Weekday afternoons between 3pm and 6pm approaching Brisbane.
- Accommodation out of town, up Lighthouse Road, at Wategos or on an unsealed driveway: a few extra minutes at the start.
- Groups splitting across more than one vehicle, or a stop to collect other passengers.
