Ballina Byron Gateway Airport (BNK) is the Northern Rivers' own airport: one modest terminal, a short walk from the aircraft to the bags, and Byron Bay only 35 minutes up the road. If you have only flown into Gold Coast or Brisbane before, the scale of it takes a moment to adjust to, in the best way.
There is one baggage carousel, a café, a car hire desk and a car park you can see from the door. Bags usually arrive within a few minutes of the aircraft, and there is no long walk or transit between terminals. Because the building is small, a driver meeting you can stand at the carousel rather than somewhere you have to find.
That is how we do it: your name on a sign at baggage claim, then a short walk to the vehicle. Your flight is monitored, so an early or late landing needs no phone call from you, and standard waiting is up to 60 minutes from the scheduled pickup.
Ballina is a domestic airport, with services from Sydney, Melbourne and Newcastle rather than a full national timetable, and no international arrivals. When those flights suit you, it is comfortably the easiest way into Byron Bay. When they do not, Gold Coast Airport is about 50 minutes from Byron and Brisbane about two hours.
Ballina is forgiving on the way out. Check-in is quick and the queue is rarely long, so we usually collect from Byron Bay around two hours before a domestic departure and closer to 90 minutes from Lennox Head or Ballina itself. School holidays and event weekends earn a little extra time on Ewingsdale Road.
New South Wales observes daylight saving, so unlike Gold Coast Airport there is no clock difference to think about here.
How far is Ballina airport from Byron Bay? 35 km, about 35 minutes by road. Our fixed private transfer fare is $79 each way, including GST, airport access fees and standard tolls.
